Barbie, la icónica muñeca de moda creada por la empresa estadounidense Mattel, ha sido un fenómeno cultural desde su introducción en 1959. A lo largo de los años, Barbie no solo ha sido un juguete, sino que también se ha convertido en un símbolo cultural que refleja y moldea las normas y expectativas sociales, especialmente en relación con las mujeres. Las películas de Barbie, que incluyen películas animadas y series, ofrecen una perspectiva única para explorar temas clave y problemas relacionados con las experiencias de las mujeres en la sociedad. La más reciente película “Barbie” dirigida por Greta Gerwig y protagonizada por Margot Robbie y Ryan Gosling, muestra diferentes estereotipos que se tienen de la mujer y como Barbie busca tener su propia identidad. Esta película muestra varios aspectos que están relacionados con la imagen corporal y estándares de belleza, el empoderamiento y aspiraciones profesionales, las amistades y relaciones románticas, y la representación cultural y diversidad.
Imagen Corporal y Estándares de Belleza
Barbie ha sido criticada a menudo por perpetuar estándares de belleza poco realistas con su figura alta, delgada y rasgos impecables. Sin embargo, estos estándares son desafiados al comienzo de la película cuando Barbie despierta con cambios en su cuerpo. Ella está cansada, tiene mal aliento, y hasta pie plano. En este momento todas las Barbies se preocupan y creen que tiene un mal funcionamiento pero Barbie se da cuenta que esta pasando por una “crisis existencial” y decide empezar un viaje donde se descubrirá a ella misma. Esto se puede relacionar con la vida real, cuando las adolescentes tienen cambios en su cuerpo y sienten la presión de verse perfectas en una sociedad que tiene altos estandares de belleza y las juzga por su físico. Es especialmente dificil para mujeres como yo, Latinas, crecer viendo programas de television con artistas blancas y con cuerpos perfectos a los cuales todas queremos tener. Por lo tanto, esta película plantea preguntas sobre el impacto de tales representaciones en la autoestima y la imagen corporal de las niñas.
Empoderamiento y Aspiraciones Profesionales
En los últimos años, Barbie ha experimentado transformaciones para ser más diversa e inclusiva. La pelicula de Barbie muestra personajes femeninos en una variedad de profesiones, desafiando los roles de género tradicionales. Esta narrativa tienen como objetivo empoderar a las niñas al retratar a las mujeres como líderes capaces, científicas, atletas y más. Este tema es sumamente importante, sobre todo para las mujeres Latinas, la cuales desgraciadamente crecimos viendo el machismo en nuestra comunidad o hasta en nuestra propia casa. Jamás nos hubieramos imaginado que las mujeres podrián ser astronautas, doctoras, jugadoras de Hockey, y más. Simplemente nos limitabamos a los roles de ama de casa o maestras, que era lo mas común en la sociedad. Sin embargo, el lema de Barbie “tu puedes ser lo que quieras ser” inspira a muchas ninas que crecen sintiendose princesas y se empoderan para ser lo que quieran ser. Este es el ejemplo de la Barbie astronauta, con la cual crecimos jugando pero jamas nos imaginamos que este era el sueno de una mujer Mexicana: Katya Echazarreta. Quien es ahora nuestra primer astronauta Mexicana que viajo al espacio el 4 de Junio de 2022.
Ella es una ingeniera eléctrica originaria de Guadalajara, México, y fue seleccionada para el viaje entre un grupo de 7,000 solicitantes de más de 100 países basados en sus logros sobresalientes en la industria espacial (Larnaud, 2022). Por esta razón, explorar cómo se representan estas aspiraciones profesionales en las muñecas y en la película de Barbie arroja luz sobre las percepciones cambiantes de los roles de género. Y a su vez, empoderan a las niñas a saber que pueden tener cualquier profesión que se imaginen.
Amistad y Relaciones
Muchas películas de Barbie enfatizan la importancia de la amistad y las relaciones, ofreciendo narrativas que van más allá del enfoque estereotipado en los enredos románticos. Al resaltar el valor de las amistades femeninas, como el de Gloria y Barbie, y la variedad de relaciones que las mujeres pueden tener, las películas de Barbie contribuyen a las conversaciones sobre la naturaleza multifacética de las experiencias de las mujeres en la sociedad. En este caso, la amistad de Gloria, hace que Barbie se de cuenta de como las mujeres son vistas en el mundo real. Esto fue un gran descubrimiento para Barbie pero tuvo el gran apoyo de Gloria.
Representación Cultural y Diversidad
A medida que la sociedad se vuelve más consciente de la importancia de la diversidad y la inclusión, las películas de Barbie han comenzado a presentar personajes de diversos contextos culturales. Al principio, solo se veia a Barbie siendo representada por una mujer blanca pero a traves de los años, se fueron incluyendo muñecas de diferente color de piel, incluso con discapasidades, lo cual hizo que las niñas se sintieran vistas y escuchadas por primera vez. Por este motivo, analizar cómo se manejan estas representaciones en términos de autenticidad y sensibilidad proporciona perspectivas sobre el discurso más amplio sobre la diversidad cultural y la necesidad de contar historias más inclusivas.
Narración Inspiradora
Algunas películas de Barbie incorporan elementos educativos y narración inspiradora. Al abordar problemas sociales o eventos históricos, esta película pueden servir como herramientas para impartir lecciones importantes a audiencias jóvenes. Analizar los temas y mensajes incorporados en estas narrativas permite una comprensión más profunda de cómo Barbie contribuye a dar forma a las perspectivas sobre cuestiones sociales. Por ejemplo, el personaje de Gloria tiene un monólogo arrollador en el cual dice que: “Es literalmente imposible ser mujer… Eres tan hermosa y tan inteligente, y me mata que no creas que eres lo suficientemente buena... Estoy tan cansada de verme a mí misma y a todas las demás mujeres enredarse en nudos para gustarle a la gente” (Gerwig, 2023).
Tristemente, en la sociedad actual, las mujeres enfrentan una presión abrumadora para cumplir con estándares de belleza inalcanzables y estereotipos poco realistas. Se les exige mantener una apariencia perfecta, lo que puede generar inseguridad, ansiedad y baja autoestima. La sociedad debe promover la diversidad y la aceptación para empoderar a las mujeres y romper con estos cánones dañinos.
En conclusión, la película de Barbie ofrece un rico tapiz de temas y problemas relacionados con las experiencias de las mujeres en la sociedad. Desde la imagen corporal y las aspiraciones profesionales hasta la representación cultural y la diversidad. Esta películas desempeña un papel en la formación de percepciones y contribuyen a conversaciones en curso sobre los roles de género. Si bien Barbie sigue siendo un querido ícono cultural, el análisis de sus narrative cinematográfica proporciona una perspectiva matizada sobre el panorama en evolución de las experiencias de las mujeres en la sociedad.

Barbie, the iconic fashion doll created by the American toy company Mattel, has been a cultural phenomenon since her introduction in 1959. Over the years, Barbie has not only been a toy but has also become a cultural symbol that reflects and shapes societal norms and expectations, particularly in relation to women. Barbie movies, including animated films and series, offer a unique perspective to explore key themes and issues related to women's experiences in society. The most recent film "Barbie," directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, portrays different stereotypes associated with women and how Barbie seeks to establish her own identity. This film addresses various aspects related to body image and beauty standards, empowerment and professional aspirations, friendships, and romantic relationships, as well as cultural representation and diversity.
Body Image and Beauty Standards
Barbie has been criticized for perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards with her tall, slender figure and impeccable features. However, these standards are challenged at the beginning of the movie when Barbie wakes up to realize there are changes in her body. She is tired, has bad breath, and even flat feet. At this moment, all the Barbies worry about her and believe she is malfunctioning, but Barbie realizes she is going through an "existential crisis" and decides to embark on a journey of self-discovery. This can be related to real life, when teenagers experience changes in their bodies and feel pressure to look perfect in a society with high beauty standards that judges them based on their physical appearance. It is especially challenging for women like me, Latinas, who grew up watching television with White female artists who had the perfect bodies that everyone wanted to have. Therefore, this movie raises questions about the impact of such representations on the self-esteem and body image of girls.
Empowerment and Career Aspirations
In recent years, Barbie has undergone transformations to become more diverse and inclusive. The Barbie movie showcases female characters in a variety of professions, challenging traditional gender roles. This narrative aims to empower girls by portraying women as capable leaders, scientists, athletes, and more. This issue is extremely important for us, Latina women, who unfortunately grew up witnessing “Machismo” (sexism) in our community or even in our own home.
We never imagined that women could be astronauts, doctors, hockey players, or more. We simply confined ourselves to the roles of housewives or teachers, which were the most common in our society. However, Barbie’s motto “you can be anything you want to be” inspires many girls who grew up playing to be princesses and who were empowered to become whatever they wanted to be. This is the case of the astronaut Barbie. Many of us grew up playing with her but never imagined that this was the dream of a Mexican woman named Katya Echazarreta. She is our first Mexican woman to become an astronaut and traveled to space on June 4, 2022.
She is “an electrical engineer originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, was selected for the trip from a pool of 7,000 applicants from more than 100 countries based on her outstanding achievements in the space industry” (Larnaud, 2022).
For this reason, exploring how these professional aspirations are represented in the Barbie dolls and movie sheds light on changing perceptions of gender roles. And in turn, it empowers girls to know that they can pursue any profession they can imagine.
Friendship and Relationships
Many Barbie movies emphasize the importance of friendship and relationships, offering narratives beyond the stereotypical focus on romantic relationships. By highlighting the value of female friendships, such as that between Gloria and Barbie, and the variety of relationships women can have, Barbie movies contribute to conversations about the multifaceted nature of women's experiences in society. In this case, Gloria's friendship makes Barbie realize how women are viewed in the real world. This had a great impact on Barbie, but she had Gloria’s support during her existential crisis.
Cultural Representation and Diversity
As society becomes more aware of the importance of diversity and inclusion, Barbie movies have begun to feature characters from diverse cultural backgrounds. Initially, Barbie was only represented by a White female figure, but over the years, Barbie was made in different skin colors, even with disabilities, making girls feel seen and heard for the first time. Therefore, analyzing how these representations are handled in terms of authenticity and sensitivity provides insights into the broader discussion on cultural diversity and the need for more inclusive storytelling.
Inspirational Storytelling
Some Barbie movies incorporate educational elements and inspirational storytelling. By addressing social issues or historical events, these films can serve as tools to impart important lessons to young audiences. Analyzing the themes and messages embedded in these narratives allows for a deeper understanding of how Barbie contributes to shaping perspectives on social issues. For example, Gloria's character delivers a powerful monologue in which she says, "It's literally impossible to be a woman... You're so beautiful and smart, and it kills me that you don't believe you're good enough... I'm just so tired of watching myself and every single other woman tie herself into knots so that people will like us" (Gerwig, 2023).
Sadly, in today's society, women face overwhelming pressure to meet unattainable beauty standards and unrealistic stereotypes. They are expected to maintain a perfect appearance, leading to insecurity, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Society must promote diversity and acceptance to empower women and break free from these harmful norms.
In conclusion, the Barbie movie offers a rich tapestry of themes and issues related to women's experiences in society. From body image and professional aspirations to cultural representation and diversity, this film plays a role in shaping perceptions and contribute to ongoing conversations about gender roles. While Barbie remains a beloved cultural icon, the analysis of her cinematic narrative provides a nuanced perspective on the evolving landscape of women's experiences in the broader societal context.
