Open Education Week 2020: Things You Can Do to Engage!

In this webinar, our presenters will share information about the requirements of the legislation; challenges with compliance; strategies and resources, including a toolkit, to meet those challenges; and examples from the trenches of compliance, including at Austin Community College and the University of Texas at Arlington.

This talk will address how OER improves the conditions of marginalized student and faculty populations through more inclusive and equitable practices. The keynote will also challenge the audience to think more critically about traditional academic practices, procedures, and infrastructure by encouraging the adoption of open education philosophies at the institutional level.

This webinar will briefly define OER and related terms and then delve into the nexus between these course materials and accessibility. We will also (re) consider our definitions of ‘access’ and seek to understand how using OER might help us to do so.

Two MSU Denver professors will share their adventures in using OER and broadening their pedagogical strategies in their courses. Professor Steve Krizman will share his experience using hypothesis to engage students in Public Relations Research and Planning. Dr. Emily Ragan will share her experience iteratively developing a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) in Biochemistry II, an experience that has broadened the scope and student experience of the course. The materials she developed for the CURE are openly licensed and freely available.

Dr. Bishop discusses the mission of the University System of Maryland’s Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation, its philosophy, how her team has been identifying priority areas, and the way they work collaboratively with a variety of partners to catalyze new ways of thinking about student success across Maryland. She will provide concrete examples of this work that are specific to the Kirwan Center’s leadership of the Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative.
