"The Human Library® is, in the true sense of the word, a library of people. We host events where readers can borrow human beings serving as open books and have conversations they would not normally have access to. Every human book from our bookshelf, represent a group in our society that is often subjected to prejudice, stigmatization or discrimination because of their lifestyle, diagnosis, belief, disability, social status, ethnic origin etc." - HumanLibrary.org

The Islander Cultural Alliance (ICA) invites you to take a moment and consider any assumptions you might have about others based on physical appearance or even as you learn more about their occupation, political affiliation, mental/physical wellness, etc. It's a challenge not to rely on the different learned or adopted stereotypes when making a split-second decision about who someone is. The goal of the Human Library Event (which will take place in September 2024 - stay tuned) is to remove yourself from these quick assumptions and consider beyond them - a challenge to truly unjudge someone.

More about being a Human BookHuman Library Logo - humanoid sketched body with open book as head; also includes word cloud of different examples of book topics

A Human Book is a volunteer who aims to create understanding through open and honest dialogue about prejudice and stigmatization. Each book represents a group or community in our society that is often subject to prejudice, stigmatization, or discrimination based on their lifestyle, diagnosis, belief, disability, social status, ethnic origin, etc.

Readers will have the opportunity to meet with Books, listen to their stories, and ask questions to learn more about the personal experiences of the books.

All books will receive training and orientation before the event and we will ensure they have all of the support they need during the event to guarantee maximum comfort and security.

Note: The library serves as a hosting location and online information portal for the event but is not involved in the organizing and planning. The student-led organization, Islander Cultural Alliance (ICA), is the coordinator for this event. For more information ica@tamucc.edu.
