It's Shark Week!!

July 7-14

Join the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi as we celebrate this week-long exploration of illustrious creatures that swim the deep blue, our friend the shark!

Throughout this guide, you'll find a variety of resources. Feel free to explore and learn more as you go. In the infamous words of Jaws (1975), "You'll never go in the water again!"...Or, you'll dive even deeper into the world of marine life - either way, we support you!

 

Special Shark Week Events

 

Deadline Jun. 21st, Voting Week of Jul. 24 - Bookmark and Button Design Contest in honor of Shark Week!

Mary and Jeff Bell Library, 1st Floor, Near Scanners/Coffee Machine | During Library Hours

Feeling creative - and a little bit sharky? The library is hosting a Bookmark and Button Design Contest in honor of Shark Week! Design templates are available online and in the library. Try your hand at designing the 2024 button - or bookmark - or both! Designs are due on June 21st. Voting will take place the week on July 24th. Check the library social media channels for more information - or email bell.library@tamucc.edu. Winning bookmarks and buttons will be available in the library July 7-14th while supplies last!

 

Jul. 8 - Walk the Plank!

Mary and Jeff Bell Library, 2nd Floor, Immersive Reality Lab | 1-3 pm

Come Walk the Plank! How’s your sense of balance? Are you afraid of the fall? Join us and test your nerve in the Immersive Reality Lab on the second floor of the library (high adrenaline - without the sharks!).

 

Jul. 8-12 - I-Create Fossil Pit

Mary and Jeff Bell Library, 2nd Floor, I-Create Lab | During I-Create Lab's Open Hours

Search for your own Miocene age shark’s teeth and other marine fossils in I-Create’s Fossil Pit! You may discover the remains of ancient sharks, whales, bony fish, and coral just to name a few.  The fossiliferous material is from the Pliocene Yorktown and Miocene Pungo River Formations. Jul. 11 - Celebrate the work of Katie Gheysen, a 2024 NSF Graduate Research Fellow

Mary and Jeff Bell Library, 2nd Floor, Special Collections and Archives Commons Area | 2 pm

Join us as we Celebrate the work of Katie Gheysen, a 2024 NSF Graduate Research Fellow! Learn about the award and Katie’s research, focusing on juvenile shark and ray habitat use in coastal southern Texas. Her previous projects revolved around depth behavior in Shortfin mako sharks (Isurus oxyrinchus) in the Western North Atlantic Ocean. There will be time for questions after the presentation, refreshments will be served. For more information: libraryeventscomm@tamucc.edu

Shark Week Book Display!

Du dun, du dun, du-dun du-dun du-dun, it’s Shark Week!! Trust your library to have a Book Display ready and waiting with a number of print books about sharks. All books are available for FREE check out. Just grab a book, or books, you’re interested in, stop by the Circulation Desk with you Islander ID (or some form of photo ID), and check out your book(s) of choice! The display will be up from July 1st – 14th.
