How to Evaluate Information?

For the most part, information you find in a library database and/or Google Scholar is selected because is high-quality and highly credible. Your biggest task is to make sure that the information you found is credible and suitable for your assignment. What does that mean?

Credible means the information accurate or believable. Sometimes credibility can be influenced by the author or the publication. Ask yourself if the information you found is credible enough for your assignment.

Suitable means the information is appropriate for your assignment. Ask yourself if the information you found is suitable for your assignment.

If you are searching online on social media or on Google, you will want to evaluate the information you find before you use it. There are two main ways to evaluate information:

  • Vertical Reading - CRAAP test
  • Lateral Reading - using other sources to validate credibility.
