The library subscribes to Education research databases that contain abstracts and full text to resources for student use. A full list of these and other useful databases are available in the main Education Research Guide. These databases can be individually accessed and searched by selecting the 'databases' link on the library home page and navigating to a database.
The Quick Search allows you to search across many databases as well as the library catalog in one place. Below, you'll find a video that provides more detail on how to navigate the Quick Search.
For help using any of these databases or search methods, ask a librarian.
Use keywords, phrases, and Boolean phrases (AND, OR, NOT) to search the databases for relevant results. Iterate through different combinations of terms and use synonyms to retrieve more results.
For instance if you search for the phrase "cultural competency" in combination with phrases like "language differences", "gender", or "racial differences" you will retrieve some results. You might retrieve different results if you use synonymous phrases like “cultural differences”, “cultural context”, “cultural literacy”, “cultural pluralism”, “multicultural education”, and “cross cultural training”. One good place to find these synonymous terms are in the Subject field on result records.
Searching for resources is a process that may take a bit of time and involve plenty of back and forth. You must use different terms in different combination across different databases. Each new combination might return different results.
Navigate through the interactive box below to learn more about searching with keywords.
I assume almost everyone has searched Amazon before, yes? When you search on Amazon, you are provided with a menu on the left side of the screen where you can filter through your results. Are you looking for Prime items? Does color matter? Number of review stars? As a matter of fact, many shopping sites have a very similar left column menu where you can filter through your results.
Searching using the Quick Search or databases operates very similarly. You may use the filters in the left column of the results page to limit and refine your results. You can decide where you're searching for a book, eBook, journal article, and more. If you're conducting research, I advise you to be sure to always select the "Scholarly" or "Peer-Reviewed" filter to receive the top results.
The video below shows you how to conduct a quick search from Bell Library's homepage and how to access the resources you find there.
If you need anything Bell Library doesn't own, Interlibrary Loan is the service that can find those materials to you!
Usually, we'll be able to get the material in a few days, but a hard copy (like a full book or journal issue) will take us a little longer.
Don't forget: If you are currently a registered Distance Learner with the Registrar's Office or designated as a Remote Researcher; you can have books from Bell Library’s Main Collection, and borrowed interlibrary loan materials, shipped directly to your home for free. We also supply a prepaid return label for your convenience.
