Using Course Library in Canvas

FAQs

How do I request items not owned by Bell Library for course readings?

For a current course in Canvas:

  1. Open a course > open the Course Library from the lefthand menu.
  2. Open an existing Reading List or create a new one.
  3. Select Add Items > Manual Entry > Enter Title, Author, and Type >Add and Close.

You can also request items the library does not own using the Cite It! tool.

The Bell Library team will contact you to discuss purchasing materials not already held by the library if available. Please note that the library does not purchase textbooks.

If you are requesting a new item for a course that is not yet available in Canvas, please email your request to libreserves@tamucc.edu as far in advance as possible.

What is the preferred browser?

The Course Library tool works best in Chrome. Other browsers work but unexpected behaviors may occur.

If you are using another browser and something isn't working the way it should, try Chrome instead.

Why can't my students see the Course Library?

Confirm that you have submitted the list (checking the box to publish to students) and that the list is associated with your course. If the list is in a draft mode, students won't be able to view it.

I can't find a journal article or book with "Search the Library" in the Course Library tool.  What are my options?

Use the "Manual Entry" option to provide information about the item you want to use, and we'll see what we can do. We're happy to help you find the resources you need!

How can I link to an e-book chapter?

Depending on the e-book platform, you may be able to link to a chapter, or in other cases you will have to link to the entire e-book and then provide directions to your students about which chapter(s) to read.

Search for the chapter by title using "Search the Library". If you are not able to find the chapter this way, you can try searching directly in the library's Quick Search outside Canvas and limiting to book chapters available online.

Still no luck? Email libreserves@tamucc.edu.

What are "Favorites"?

Favorites are a way to save items to a re-usable collection instead of a specific Course Library.

To view your Favorites:

Log in to Canvas > select a course > select Course Library from the lefthand menu.
Open in new window icon Open the Course Library in a new tab by clicking on the "Open in new tab" icon in the upper right:
Click on Favorites on the lefthand side of the screen.

The main menu appears at the left at the top of the list. Use the other icons to:

  • Add an item.
  • Sort the list by date added, title, or author.
  • Filter the list by tags or by material type. To remove a previously selected filter, click the "x" next to the tag.
  • Search your favorites by title, author, or other item details.

How do I re-use my Course Library in multiple sections / courses?

If you wish to re-use the same List in multiple sections / courses, you may add other courses using the Manage link to course option on the list menu.

Click + Add another course and search the course name and number.

If you wish to create a customized version of your Course Library for another course, use the Duplicate list option, edit the copy, and then associate with a correct course.

If another instructor wants to work together on course readings or re-use the List you created, add them to your List as a Collaborator. Collaborators may associate the same list with their courses, or duplicate your list to create a copy for additional customization.

Can my Teaching Assistant create a new Reading List or request a new book through Library Reading List?

When an instructor adds a TA to a Canvas course, it does not automatically create permissions for the TA in Library Reading Lists. The instructor must create a Reading List and add the TA as a Collaborator in the Reading List.

How do I access the Reading List tool for courses that are not yet loaded in Canvas?

There a couple of ways to do this!

Access Reading List in Canvas Through a Current Live Course

  1.  Go to a current live course in Canvas.
  2.  Access the Course Library tool.
  3.  Create a list. You will be able to access the list later and associate with the new course once it goes live.
  4. The steps for adding items will then be the same as for a reading list that is already associated with a live course.

Access Course Library outside of Canvas

  1. Go to https://tamucc.alma.exlibrisgroup.com/leganto/login?institute=01TEXAM_COR&auth=CAS
  2. Log in using your Island ID and password.
  3. Create a list and add items like normal. You will be able to associate your list with your new course once that course is available in Canvas.

Can I access the Course Library on a mobile device?

Yes, you can view your Course Library on your device! Log into Canvas, select your course, and then access the Course Library via the link on the left.

However, to edit your Course Library, you'll have to use a computer.
