Course Library: Building Resource Lists in Canvas

Favorites

You can create a list of "favorites" in Course Library. This could be books, articles, websites, or anything else you'd like to keep track of as possible resources to share with your students in your courses. Favorites are a way to save items to a re-usable collection instead of a specific Course Library.

There are a couple of ways to access your Favorites:

There is a quick link from within Course Library:

Or use this link to log directly into Course Library without logging in to Canvas first. There is a link to your favorites in the left-hand menu.

To view your Favorites: Click on Favorites on the lefthand side of the screen.

The main menu appears at the left at the top of the list.

Use the options to:

  • Add an item.
  • Sort the list by date added, title, or author.
  • Filter the list by tags or by material type. To remove a previously selected filter, click the "x" next to the tag.
  • Search your favorites by title, author, or other item details.

Adding an Item to Favorites

You can add an item to your favorites using Search the Library or Cite It.

Here's an example of how this looks when using Search the Library:

Simply select "Favorites" and click Add.

Organize Your Favorites

You can organize your favorites using tags. You can create your own tags so that you can then sort your list in the most useful way for you. These tags are different from the tags used in your course library, which are covered elsewhere in this guide.

Tags cannot be created or added when you are adding an item. Tags must be added after the item is added to your favorites.

Material type tags (book, article, etc.) are added automatically to each citation in your favorites.

To create a tag:

  1. Make sure you are in your favorites. It will say Favorites at the top of the screen.
  2. Click on the citation you want to add a tag to.
  3. Click in the "Add private tag" space and type your tag.
  4. Hit enter to create the tag.

To apply an existing tag to an item:

  1. Make sure you are in your favorites.
  2. Click on the citation you want to add a tag to.
  3. Click in the "Add private tag" space. A list of existing tags will appear.
  4. Select a tag from the list.

To filter by tags:

  1. Click on Filter in the menu at the top of your list.
  2. Choose one or more tags.
  3. Click Apply.
  4. If at any point your tags disappear while you are filtering, refresh your screen.
