Course Library: Building Resource Lists in Canvas

This guide is a work in progress. We are still learning Course Library, too! We will be adding to the guide as we learn about new features or encounter problems or questions that need to be addressed.

The Course Library (powered by Leganto) is a Canvas tool that empowers instructors to create course resource lists quickly. With this tool, you can share course materials with your students by adding online resources, physical books, DVDs, and personal files.

Follow These Easy Steps to Get Started

Step 1: Add Course Library to your course in Canvas

• In Canvas, select course and go to Settings
• Click the Navigation tab
• Drag Course Library from the list of available apps into your course navigation
• Click Save. You may need to refresh the screen to see Course Library in the course navigation

Step 2: Create your list

• Click Course Library
• Click Create list. Follow the steps to create your resource list for your course.

Step 3: Add items to your Course Library in many ways

• Add library resources (books, ebooks, articles, streaming audio, and video) with the "Search the Library" option
• Add items from the web with the Cite It! bookmarklet 
• Import references by uploading RIS or BibTex files 
• Upload your own personal files  
• Use Manual entry to create citations by hand

Step 4: Organize Your List

• Create sections tailored to your syllabus  
• Filter your list in a variety of ways 
• Add tags for required and optional readings 

Step 5: Publish and Share Your List

• Click Submit List when you are finished adding items. If the list is ready for your students, click the checkbox next to "Also publish the list to students."
• Physical items, new e-books, and streaming media require additional processing time: from one day to several weeks. These items are ready when their status shows Complete.
