What is a DOI?
DOI is an acronym for “digital object identifier,” which means it is a digital identifier of an object. A DOI is a unique and persistent identifier that can be assigned to publications, data, and other scholarly products.
What are the benefits of a DOI?
- A DOI is a persistent identifier providing easy online access to the digital object
- A DOI is tied to metadata and information about a digital object, enhancing the discoverability of the work
- A DOI enables accurate citation and accurate usage tracking of the scholarly output
- A DOI makes the creator of works identifiable
How do I get a DOI?
In order for a DOI to be minted for your work, you must meet the following criteria
- Intellectual property (IP) is owned by TAMU-CC or an affiliated researcher
- The full text of the work must be made publicly available. An embargo can be requested. Copyright licenses may vary; we encourage Creative Commons Licensing. There may be instances, such as privacy concerns within data, where the work cannot be made publicly available. In this case, please contact the library.
- Metadata must include the following
- Creator(s): Given Name, Family Name, Name as it appears on work
- Title of work
- Description or abstract
- Type of work
- ORCID (if available)
- The works must be deposited in the TAMU-CC Repository. There may be exceptions, please contact the library to discuss.
- The work will remain unchanged
- Unique research output
- Output has not been assigned a DOI by another agency
- No copyright has been infringed
- Contributes to the scholarly record, and in the case or datasets, is analogous to a journal article
For what type of works can I request a DOI?
DOIs can be assigned to a number of digital objects including, but not limited to, the following
- Book chapters
- Books
- Data and data sets
- Images
- Posters
- Preprints
- Presentations
- Reports
