I-Know Faculty Guide:SLO 1: Find

SLO 1: Find

The first Student Learning Objective (SLO) of I-Know is Find. We define Find in 2 parts: A) the ability to identify and pursue effective digital approaches for accessing information (this includes actions such as keyword searching and citation following) and B) the ability to assess the quality and relevance of one's search results.

Activities that align with SLO 1 focus on developing students’ ability to design and refine a search strategy. We may do this intuitively, but the goal of I-Know is to make students’ search strategies visible. This way, students can receive guidance on improving their strategies over time.

What Does this Mean for the Courses I Teach?

All First Year Seminar courses will integrate finding information into their teaching and assessment.

If you need inspiration for integrating SLO 1 into your course through formative lessons, we have provided sample activity ideas in the Activity Ideas for SLO 1: Find section of this guide.

If you have questions about how the I-Know assessment will look, at both an assignment and program level, click Assessing SLO 1: Find.

What is a Search Strategy?

search strategy refers to the keywords, search engines, and limiters we use when searching for information. More generally, it is the “what,” “where,” and scope of a search.

Aligning with the ACRL Framework

SLO 1: Find aligns with the ACRL frame Searching as Strategic Exploration. This frame touches on the way learners look for information, and their disposition when searching.
