SimplyAnalytics has a feature that allows us to map business locations onto our maps, so we can see where things like daycare centers, grocery stores, and gas stations are. Since our map currently shows how many people in out census tract don't have a usual place for health care, let's see how many hospitals are in the vicinity.
1. To start looking at businesses, click on the "Businesses" button in the upper left hand menu, next to "Data."
2. We have three different choices for searching for businesses. First, we can search for a business using a keyword, like "hospital" or "urgent care." The only problem with this search function is that when the map plots the locations it finds, it's not entirely accurate. For example, when I search "hospital," I see that for some reason they've decided that a Hilton Hotel fits my search. The second option is an Advanced Search, which is similar to searching by keywords, and it also gives us inconsistent results.
The best options is using "Browse business categories." Since SimplyAnalytics has had a lot of time to go through their data, they've organized it really well and that makes it pretty easy to find what we're looking for. So let's click on "Browse business categories."
3. Scroll down until you see an industry that looks like it might contain hospital or ready care centers. I think that will be in "Health Care and Social Assistance." Clicking that option brings us to even more categories within Health Care and Social Assistance.
4. Since I'm interested in hospitals, I'll click "General Medical and Surgical Hospitals" and then I'll choose that option again, and that takes us back to our map. The difference is that now there are some yellow dots on the map that weren't there before. We see from the Legend on the right that these dots are General Medical and Surgical Hospitals. Don't see any hospitals? Try zooming out! Just because we don't have any hospitals in our tract doesn't mean there isn't one near by.
5. If the dot has a number in it, that means there's more than one hospital in that area. Zoom in and dots will separate as the location gets more spread out on the map. Click on the yellow dots to get more information about the business.
And that's how to add businesses to your map!
